In 1984 when the Apple Macintosh computer was first released, Apple entered into a partnership with nine Australian universities to form the Apple University Consortium (Australasia). At the heart of the relationship was the ability for departments, staff and students of the universities to obtain Apple technology at reduced prices and to enable development of innovative solutions using the Macintosh. The concept of sharing information and experiences, and the ability to foster educational development activities were the major motivating factors.
The AUC Today
The AUC consists of 37 member universities across Australia and New Zealand. There are a number of associate members, including one in India. Members are represented at AUC meetings by one or both of their institution’s AUC delegate and AUCDF coordinator.
The AUC is totally independent of Apple – it is governed by the member universities and operates its own programs on its own behalf. Currently, these programs include:
- training programs for developers and system administrators
- a series of conferences:
- /dev/world for software developers
- X World for system administrators
- CreateWorld for academics and those working in the creative spaces
- a Student Developer Scholarship program, designed to support the best of the best in the student developer space.
The AUC and its programs are overseen by the AUC Executive and the AUC Development Fund Committee. The AUC Executive Committee is responsible for liaising regularly with Apple Computer and the consortium to ensure the goals of each individual member are achieved.
Further information about the activities of the AUC can be obtained from:
