This round of the AUC Honours Scholarships is open to full-time domestic students of AUC member Universities who are in their honours year in 2009. Applications are accepted from students enrolled in a broad range of disciplines, including the Sciences, Information Technology, Humanities, Engineering, Arts, Health and Business.

Applicants must be undertaking a full-year research project that in some way depends on or uses uniquely Apple technologies. For example, a project that implements a solution using Apple's Xgrid technology would likely be considered a suitable application for a scholarship. Incidental use of a Macintosh does not, in and of itself, qualify. For example, research conducted using a general cross-platform application (such as MATLAB, Microsoft Office, or SPSS) that was coincidentally conducted on the Macintosh would not attract support.

Eligibility

• This round of the AUC Honours Scholarships Program, is open to full- and part-time domestic students of AUC member universitie engaged in an Honours program in the disciplines of Science, the Humanities, Information Technology, Engineering, Creative Arts, Health or Business.

• Applicants must have commenced the research component of their Honours program at the start of 2009.

• Applicants must be engaged in a research project that depends on or uses uniquely Apple technologies.

Inclusions

• AUC Honours Scholarships have a base value of $4,000, paid in two even amounts during the scholarship.

• Up to $500 is available to support attendance at a conference, or to support publication of research in a relevant publication.

• An additional discretionary bonus of $500 is available for scholarship recipients who, on submission of their second report, and at the determination of the review committee, have excelled in their work.

Reporting Obligations

Scholarship recipients are required to submit two progress reports, one half way through the Scholarship, and one at the completion of the program.

• The AUC reserves the right to publish both reports (full, or extracts) on its web site and in its publications.

• The first report should contain the following information as appropriate

• the background to, and explanation of the research area

• a preliminary literature review

• an outline of the scientific method or research methodologies employed

• details of how Apple-specific technology will be used in the project
  

• The second report should contain the following information as appropriate

• research project outcomes

• obstacles and lessons learned in the project

• details of how Apple-specific technology was used in the project
  

• future plans

• The reports will be requested by, and must be submitted to, the AUC programs manager.

• Scholarship recipients are required to report to the AUC Programs Manager any change in their enrolment, such as withdrawal, a change between full- and part-time enrolment, or a change in enrolment fraction with 30 days of such a change taking place.

Selection Criteria

To be considered for an honours scholarship, applicants must:

• be engaged in a research project that depends on or uses uniquely Apple technologies and that is relevant to the goals and values of the AUC
• be an honours-level student enrolled at an Australian campus of an AUC member institution, and have commenced the research component of the program in the current year
• have provided all required information on the application form
• have an interest in and passion for the research area (this could be explored through the submission of a 1-2 minute video presentation)

Copyright and Intellectual Property

Neither Apple nor the AUC solicit any claim on copyright or intellectual property of projects funded through the Honours Scholarship Program (but note that the AUC reserves the right to publish both of the required reports). However, the AUC requires acknowledgement of the scholarship in the thesis document, and in any publications or presentations made concerning the project.

Applications

To apply for a Honours Scholarhsip you will need to undertake these steps:

1. Application Video (optional, but preferred)

Produce a short video introducing yourself and your research project.

• the video should be no longer than 5 minutes and no larger that 50 megabytes when compressed, and should not be greater than about 320x240 pixels
• the video is a chance to introduce yourself, and tell the committee about your project, experience and passion for the Apple platform - just you talking to the camera is fine - we don't require, or even want, a marketing or promotional video
• upload the video to YouTube, Vimeo or a similar video-sharing site, or host it as a Quicktime movie (.mov) on any site you have storage rights on - do not email the video to the AUC
• if you are unable to produce and upload such a video, there are fields on the application form where you can provide more information about yourself and your proposed project
  

2. Application Form (mandatory)

All applicants will need to complete a web based application form.

• you will need to provide a link to the video as part of the application form
• you are able to save and come back to your application should you wish to do so but your application must be submitted and completed by the 12 August 2009.
• you will need to provide a text based copy of your Academic Record as part of the application form - this must be simple plain text (7-bit ASCII) with no 8-bit characters, fonts or formatting (the best way to produce such text is to paste it into a plain text TextEdit document first, tidy it up, then copy-and-paste that into the online application system)

All applications must be completed and submitted by 5.00pm (Sydney time) on 12 August 2009.
